As of Monday I will be 30 weeks pregnant, and only have about 10 weeks to go until we meet our little boy. We are so excited! The picture on the right is from last week, at the 29 week mark. I feel bigger, and I know I AM bigger, but I was blown away to see this picture up against the 18 week pic! Wow, Baby C is really growing! He is kicking as I write this, we are listening to one of his favorite songs - "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys. It comes up on my Zune as I drive to school and when I sing along he moves and groves. Maybe it will help when he's feeling fussy some day.
The baby's brain is one of the organs that will continue to develop until the day he is born. Over this last week it has gotten too big for his little head, and therefore it has had to add the wrinkles that are so characteristic of the human brain. Before last week different groups of tissue followed by his spleen were in charge of creating red blood cells. At this point his bone marrow has taken over, and this change means that he will be better equipt to thrive when he is born.

My baby is already how long???

I read this quote and thought of my little Baby C kicking and wiggling his way into week 30. I will be 29 weeks pregnant on Monday, Jan. 25 and space is getting cramped for our little guy. I read that the kicks I feel are mostly from elbows and knees. I wonder which of the two I can feel poking out around what was once my navel... The baby is about 17 inches long, which amazes me. He actually won't get much longer, he'll just put on weight between now and his debut. He should triple his current weight which is supposed to be somewhere around three pounds.
My most recent bout of nesting included unpacking children's books passed down from our niece and nephew. It was fun to find favorites like "The Runaway Bunny" and "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day." We are both looking forward to story time when our little one arrives. My mom told me that she and my dad used to "fight" over who got to read to my brother and me. :)
Vinnie's first week of the semester went really well. He's taking Math and Communications, and both classes so far are interesting for him. He's excited about how well the math is going. His homework is submitted online where he receives instant feedback, so he knows he's had some success thus far. In addition to starting classes, this week he was involved in an Aikido demonstration at the YMCA. His friend, Blake, is working to set up a dojo there. It went extremely well and generated lots of interest. The baby jumped around whenever anyone fell or rolled!
I can't believe how much needs to happen at school before I leave. Everyone please cross your fingers that the district hires the sub I have lined up for choir. There is a hiring freeze, so we've hit a snag, and I really want someone qualified and energetic to handle my program while I'm away. The good news is that both of my principals are extremely supportive and willing to help me in any way they can. I am lucky to work in a profession where children are so valued, and with administrators who are also parents and therefore deeply understand what I'm about to experience.
I've had extremely strange dreams throughout my pregnancy, and this week was no exception. I dreamed that I met and held the baby, but I couldn't see his face. I also dreamed that Vinnie moved out and decided to live in a motor home, which gave us both a good laugh! He promises not to let that one come true. My friend, Josie, dreamed early in her pregnancy that a section of her marching band became zombies and started eating the rest of the band. I think she wins the prize, don't you?
Pictures have been requested, but I haven't taken one in a couple of weeks. I'll get on that and give you guys a 30 week picture next time.

28 Weeks
Wow! Look at the little pea-in-the-pod moving across the ticker at the top of this blog. I can hardly believe his progress. I am at 28 weeks or 7 months today. I have 3 months to go - in case you didn't know, the whole "nine month" thing is a dirty lie. If you do the math, 40 weeks of pregnancy actually equals ten months. However, time is still absolutely flying by.
We saw "Avatar" on Sunday and I realized before the show started that it was the first movie we had seen in the theater since Baby C could hear what was going on around him. What a trip it must have been for our little guy! As you know, he loves music, especially strong beats and drums. The movie score is gorgeous and the aboriginal drumming earned quite a rection. He also likes to kick when I sing, and when Vinnie talks to me. I just love feeling him wiggle around, and have noticed some sort of body part that often pushes out by my navel. From the shape of it, we think it may be a little foot!
At our appointment on Wednesday I was measured for the first time as I thought I would be. I forgot to ask for the measurement, but I did remember to ask about the heartbeat which was 150 beats per minute. Dr. Archibald said he heard the heartbeat below my belly button, which means that Baby C may have "done his flipping" out of the breach position he was in at our last two ultrasounds. I found out that I don't need to be concerned about a breach position until I'm at 36 weeks, and even then there are ways to move the baby. I'm so grateful to have a doctor with such a calm, reassuring manner. He always takes the time to answer our questions and never makes me feel silly. We have an appointment on Feb. 10, and after that we will go every two weeks! We are amazed at how quickly we've arrived at this point, and it only makes us more excited.
Vinnie begins his first full semester back at BSU on Tuesday. He will take two classes, both in the evening. The lighter load will be nice for our new family and the later time frame will help when the baby keeps us up at night.

Guest room becomes nursery...
Today we bought a crib! With assistance from Christmas (gift cards from Vinnie's mom and my parents) as well as a killer coupon my mom snagged, we were able to get a $350 convertible crib with changing table for $121.00! With my brother's help we were able to get it up the stairs and into our former guest room, which is now the nursery. Thanks, family! I should also thank Vinnie for his phenomenal patience while I debated between two different models. :) I have a feeling that it will be a while before it's assembled because Vinnie is working extremely hard to finish his winter class, and I (let's be honest) stink at putting furniture together. However, just seeing the box in the baby's room is a joyful thing.
We are looking forward to our appointment with Dr. Archibald on Thursday. There isn't anything particular happening at this one, just hearing that precious heartbeat again. I have yet to have my belly measured and all the books say I should have by now. I think it's because we've had ultrasounds at the last two visits and they were able to measure the baby that way. It will be interesting to see if I get measured this time around, especially because we're curious to see if Baby C has been keeping up with his advanced growth.
Last week I signed us up for our childbirth education class, which will take place in March on a Saturday. We are set for a class that takes all day rather than a series of evenings - this will really help with the hectic schedule we have coming up. We'll get to tour parts of the hospital, but not the mother-baby wing due to the flu risk. We must keep those new precious ones healthy!
This past week my friend and co-worker, Josie, learned that she is having a baby girl! The name search for her little one has now begun. We had a good laugh because our students have been joking that our children are going to grow up and get married. Now that we know Baby Call is a girl, the kids' fire has been fueled. Silly highschoolers!
I'm looking forward to this week at school because I spent all of last week sick with a cold. Unfortunately, you can't take anything to help with the symptoms when you're expecting, so it was definitely a long week. It will be great to feel back on my game for the kids' finals. Wish Vinnie luck as he finishes his last week of the winter intersession! He has a test on Monday, a group project on Tuesday, and the final on Friday. Can you believe he has to take his first test back at school on his birthday (Monday)? With my summer birthday, I find that to be shocking and upsetting!

Welcome to 2010, the year we become parents!
Whew! We have survived the Christmas season! I had nineteen performances during the month of December including both school and church, so it was a whirlwind month. The break from school was much needed and much appreciated. One of the highlights was sleeping until 1:30 on the first day off - I haven't done that since college and it was amazing.
On December 21st Vinnie began school at Boise State to become a secondary biology teacher. It's a career that he has tried to avoid for many years, but has finally come home to and we are very excited. BSU is offering a new program called the Winter Intersession that offers condensed courses, and Vinnie was surprised to learn that he had signed up for one! He's taking Foundations of Education, and I am learning so much. We have great discussions about education and have enjoyed talking with my parents and our family friend Roger about their experiences when they were in school (Roger's first school bus was a canvas-covered army truck that took him to a two-room school house in Ola, Idaho) and how education has changed for both students and teachers. Vinnie has two more weeks of this course and will then begin his first official semester on January 19th. He was lucky to have about a year's worth of core credits that were accepted to help get him started.
We received the joyous news on Christmas Eve that our dear friend Debbie is cancer-free. We have much to be thankful for in this new year!
The most exciting baby news is that Vinnie has FINALLY felt our little guy move! It is wonderful to be able to share this with him, and now our little dude loves to show off with big kicks and punches. His movements have really increased in strength and frequency over the past three weeks, sometimes he even wakes me up at night. I am currently at 26 weeks, or about 6 1/2 months and the baby's eyes can now open. He should be about 9 inches long and weigh around 2 pounds, but Baby C is ahead of schedule for growth, so he has most likely passed these markers. We have less than 100 days until my due date! Check out some of the songs posted at the bottom of the blog - they are just a few that make our little guy shake it.
